My Teaching Philosophy:
My goal as a teacher of history is not to just provide my students with a plethora of facts about the past so they can regurgitate them on a standardized test or win thousands of dollars on Jeopardy some day, but to model inquisitiveness about the past that allows them to "live" and "experience" history for themselves. Yes, I have to be concerned about the standardized test scores of my students, but I am equally concerned about the long term effects that they experience as a result of taking my courses. Did I instill in them a desire and passion to learn more about history after they leave my classroom? I strive to make history/ Social Studies their favorite classes while at my school. I get great satisfaction hearing from former students who have pursued degrees in history-related areas or have become history teachers, because of the influence that I had on them. One of my history teachers from high school had a big impact on my decision to become a teacher, and I am indebted to him for his encouragement and desire to build a love for history within me. I strive to do the same for the students I teach.
